Human Trafficking in the ED
with Dr. Julianna Deutscher
Dr. Deutscher explains the lack of recognition of human trafficking in healthcare settings. A case example is presented, illustrating how trafficking can go unnoticed in a healthcare context. The talk focuses on understanding the definition of human trafficking, its prevalence, the role of the emergency department in screening, and next steps for potential victims. Dr. Deutscher clarifies the responsibility of healthcare providers to identify and connect individuals to resources without making definitive judgments. Resources available for potential victims, such as the Lotus Health clinic at SickKids, the Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline, and Covenant House, are mentioned. The importance of creating a safety plan, connecting patients to resources, and interdisciplinary collaboration is emphasized.
